Welcome to our grand national tips 2011. We’ve been offering our free tips now for 9 years and had some success including 2 winners. This year, Charlie McCann, Director of online public relations for victorchandler has given us his tips. He’s an expert horse racing tipster, so please follow this tips for the Grand National.

Oscar Time must have every chance of giving amateur jockey Sam Waley-Cohen a famous double having ridden Gold Cup winner Long Run last month. Connections were keen to preserve what they felt was a favourable handicap mark and the horse didn’t run over fences until after the announcement of the weights. Arbor Supreme, 20/1 with Ladbrokes FREE Grand National Bets

Arbor Supreme: Finished best of all to split The Midnight Club and Oscar Time at Fairyhouse in the Bobbyjo and meets both on better terms. Long been considered an ideal type for the race but many felt he wouldn’t get into the race this year. Sneaked in at foot of the weights and Mullins’ camp undecided who is their first choice. Faller at the Chair last year and put up a career best when runner up to stablemate The Midnight Club (8lb worse off) in the Bobbyjo last time. One to consider in the Grand National off his feather weight this year.

At Cheltenham the Gold Cup was all about Denman, Kauto Star and the winner Imperial Commander but in third place was a huge run from Mon Mome.

A 100/1 winner last year Mon Mome comes back to Aintree with a new jockey, Aidan Coleman who takes over from Liam Treadwell. I think he is still capable, despite the weight, of winning again. Turning for home at Cheltenham Mon Mome was miles back and ran on up the Cheltenham Hill, making up ground.

Venitia Williams will have him spot on for this and one thing we know is that he handles Aintree and those big stiff fences. In my view Mon Mome is the one to be on to take a back to back Grand National victory.

Murphy had the choice between riding The Package or last year’s runner-up – both of whom are from the David Pipe yard – but has elected to stay loyal to the 2008 winner.

Graham Lee, also a former Grand National winner, will ride The Package.

David Johnson, who owns both horses, told At The Races: “Timmy Murphy will ride Comply Or Die. I’ve just been speaking to him and I told him it’s make your mind up time, so he’s decided to stay with Comply Or Die.

“It doesn’t surprise me as he’s come first and second for the last two years and it’s very hard to get off that.

“Graham (Lee) will ride The Package and he was very pleased with him the other day.

“I think they’ve both got big chances, but it’s a very tough race and every horse in the race has a chance.”

Comply Or Die has only been seen twice since finishing second behind Mon Mome 12 months ago.

He is due to shoulder 11st 5lb in this year’s renewal of the world’s greatest steeplechase.

The Package, who will carry 10st 7lb, was last in action at the Cheltenham Festival, where he was narrowly touched off in the William Hill Trophy.

“They did two miles on the Flat. They are in good nick and are ready now. That’s most of the work done and they should get there (Aintree) now,” said the County Kildare trainer.

“They won’t do any more serious work now. They are very fit.”

Both horses are past winners of the Becher Chase over the National fences and are around 16-1 chances to land the big prize.

This year, however, he is set go armed with joint-favourites for the Aintree marathon after Big Fella Thanks, ridden by Barry Geraghty, beat the more fancied Ruby Walsh partnered stablemate, Pasco, by a length and a half in the Raymond Mould Greatwood Gold Cup over 2½ miles at Newbury on Saturday.

Paul Nicholls Grand National Target

He is now a best-priced 12-1 joint favourite with stablemate Tricky Trickster with William Hill. Hills are also offering 11-2 for Nicholls to win the National and 13-2 for him to win both the Gold Cup and Grand National.

The significance of getting Geraghty to ride the horse at Newbury was to secure his services for the National, as Walsh is expected to plump for Tricky Trickster. “It was Ruby’s idea to drop him back in trip and sharpen him up a bit,” Nicholls said. “It’s ideal – he’s got a bit of speed and plenty of stamina.”

The Oliver Sherwood trained Eric’s Charm also booked his place in the National by winning the Blue Square Greatwood Veterans’ Chase. “He fell at the second ditch in the Topham once before,” Sherwood said, “but that would have been plenty quick enough for him and over 4½miles it should be a bit different.”

Meanwhile Nicky Henderson, whose Wogan won the Sportingbet.com Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster, issued an upbeat bulletin about his big Cheltenham Festival hopes Punchestowns and Binocular, who galloped together at Seven Barrows on Saturday.

Punchestowns was deposed as favourite for the RSA Chase by his stable companion Long Run after going lame on Friday while Binocular has only just re-entered the Champion Hurdle picture after looking extremely doubtful a fortnight ago.

“If you looked at them this morning you wouldn’t know there’d been a problem with either horse,” said Henderson. “If we are lucky and it doesn’t flare up again Punchestowns has an extremely good chance of making the Festival.”

Grand National Antepost Betting Tips

Betting on the 2010 John Smith’s Grand National moved on apace following the announcement of the weights in London on February 16^th and Tricky Trickster winner of the 4m NH Chase at the 2009 Cheltenham Festival heads the market at 12/1 with Stan James.

Tricky Trickster has been allotted 11st 4lbs for the unique Aintree test but that might look lenient if he runs into a place in the 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup which he will use as his prep for the National. Irish Grand National winner Niche Market was beaten a short head trying to give Tricky Trickster 3lbs at Newbury in the Aon Chase (a race which will always be remembered for the defeat of Denman) and they are due to meet at level weights at Aintree.

Tricky Trickster- Grand National Favourite

I expect Tricky Trickster to confirm the form with Niche Market although no seven-year-old since 1940 has won the great race. If he runs well in the Gold Cup trainer Paul Nicholls may never have a better chance of winning the race and if Ruby Walsh is confirmed for the ride (likely to have the choice of many from the Nicholls’/Willie Mullins’ camps) it would be no surprise if Tricky Trickster goes off about half his current odds.

Paul Nicholls is 6/1 to win his first Grand National with StanJames.com and the Master of Ditcheat is expected to saddle four runners in the race. As well as Tricky Trickster Nicholls is likely to run last year’s third My Will (40/1 11st-2lb), sixth in 2009 Big Fella Thanks (16s & 10-12) and Nozic (66s & 11-3) who was beaten a distance in last year’s Topham Chase on his introduction to the Grand National fences.

The Champion trainer has yet to win the Grand National and he suggested to me in a Cheltenham Preview evening in 2009 that the Champion Hurdle rather than the Grand National was the one race missing from his CV that he sought above all else, but he does look to have a very strong hand this year.


Big Fella Thanks has been well supported with a number of firms today but on a point of handicapping he faces a tough task reversing form with My Will, State Of Play and Comply Or Die. That said he was only a 7-y-o last year and normal progression would make him a major player with 10-12. He is in the same ownership as Denman and if Walsh opts for Tricky Trickster it will be interesting to see who Paul Barber & Harry Findlay opt for. He made a couple of significant mistakes last year but ran an absolute cracker and is open to considerable improvement.

Tony McCoy has yet to win the Grand National and he is retained by leading owner JP McManus who has five of the 111 entries and all bar Glenfinn Captain ought to get a run. None of the other four look to hold outstanding claims and there must be the possibility that Tony McCoy will be given dispensation by JP to ride Big Fella Thanks if, as expected, stable jockey Walsh favours Tricky Trickster.

Possol (16/1 & 11-3) has not been seen over fences since his fluent success in the StanJames.com Festival Chase at Perth. He has been very impressive in two starts over timber so far this term but that wasn’t a great race in Scotland and French breds don’t have a great record in the race with stamina (or lack of it) often an issue.

State Of Play is my antepost recommendation for the race despite finishing pulled up on his sole start of the campaign in the Hennessy Gold Cup back in November. A former winner of the Newbury feature the Evan Williams trained 10-y-o is lightly raced for one of his age and ran a cracker in the corresponding race last year when he finished fourth and would have been considerably closer but for blundering at one of the smallest fences on the course on the run to Bechers for the 2^nd time.

Character Building has long promised to be a Grand National horse despite the fact that he didn’t appear to quite get home when beaten a whisker in the 4m NH Chase at Cheltenham back in 2007. A winner back at the Festival in 2009 (Kim Muir Chase given a wonderful ride by leading amateur Jamie Codd) he had a spin over hurdles ahead of the announcement of the weights and connections of the grey will be pleased enough with a weight of 10-11.

Trainer Mouse Morris immediately dismissed the notion of running former Gold Cup winner War Of Attrition under 11-1 which I find impossible to fathom. The horse was given the same weight in 2009 yet since that date the horse has won 2 Grade 2s over timber on what could be construed unsuitable ground. I think the decision is short-sighted and I hope connections have a reappraisal of the situation after their run in the World Hurdle at the Festival next month.

Casey Jones was my antepost selection for the Hennessy Gold Cup (non runner) and as a Grade 1 winner over the larger obstacles he deserves plenty of respect although we may know more about his short-term objectives after this weekend’s Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse where a number of possible Aintree candidates put their credentials on the line.

The announcement of the Grand National weights is always a personal highlight of the racing calendar. It is and always will be my favourite race in the world but who wins? My eye was immediately drawn to the 6/1 for Paul Nicholls to break his Grand National hoodoo; but what about AP & Nicholls to combine? Having backed State Of Play and Big Fella Thanks I’m happy enough with their weights. Six of the last 11 runnings of the race have gone to the Irish and 3/1 now looks attractive. I’ll change my mind a dozen times between now and post time but that’s what makes it a wonderful race and a unique human and equine test.

So what should be back for the Grand National? Well there are several that make appeal and I think Charlie McCann from Stan James summed it up brilliantly in his Grand National Ante Post Preview. So what do the connections think?

Harry Findlay is backing his own Big Fella Thanks rather than the gambled-on Tricky Trickster to provide champion trainer Paul Nicholls with a first win in the John Smith’s Grand National at Aintree on April 10.

It may also be that Tony McCoy rides Big Fella Thanks as Ruby Walsh is almost certain to ride Tricky Trickster.

Part two, connectons reactions…

Tricky Trickster has been given 11st 4lb by senior handicapper Phil Smith, who has given three horses – Albertas Run, Madison Du Berlais and Notre Pere – top weight of 11st 10lb. I think that this is not an unfair mark especially given what we saw in the Aon Chase at Newbury. Tricky Trickster is a stayter and he will be powering home from the elbow, he could be a very decent horse. He runs in the Gold Cup and is sure to run a pretty good race with his price likely to contract sharply. In my view Tricky Trickster will go off as Grand National Favourite.

At 50/1 with Bet365 Madison Du Berlais is worth an antepost investment. The Grand National could be right up his street. He is not going to cut the mustard against the likes of Denman and Kauto Star but stays and jumps well. The weight may be the factor that puts many people off, but it is a handicap for a reason and Madison Du Berlais is a very good horse, as his form illustrates. I anticipate Madison Du Berlais going off shorter on the day.

Madison Du Berlais is six-pounds clear on Timeform ratings after the weigths for the John Smith’s Grand National were published. I find that quite interesting, substantiating that he is a very decent horse. Certainly each-way he is worth a small investment at this early stage.
