Ruby

The Paul Nicholls-trained gelding ran a tremendous race for a novice when sixth to Mon Mome last April and is ante-post favourite following his recent victory at Newbury.

That success prompted Walsh to choose him over stablemate Tricky Trickster after the latter disappointed in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

The Irish ace already has two National victories to his credit with Papillon (2000) and Hedgehunter (2005).

“He was only a novice when he ran last year. If he hadn’t run in the race last year, I’d be fancying him even more,” Walsh told At The Races.

“Some horses go back and are brilliant and some go back and don’t like it at all. That’s the one question you’d be worried about with him – would he take it to the second time?

“But his form this year is good. He was impressive at Newbury when he showed a bit of pace over two and a half (miles) and he stays.

“He might just be wanting better ground. The way the weather forecast is it could suit him.

“Tricky Trickster was a bit disappointing in the Gold Cup. You had to go on the performance in front of you and that’s why I’ve gone for Big Fella Thanks.

“It was a hard decision. There are pros and cons for every horse. I’ve come down on the side of Big Fella Thanks but the one worry I would have is he ran in the race last year.”

Cloudy Lane was put through his paces on Saturday ahead of a third tilt at the big race.

The Donald McCain-trained 10-year-old was sixth in 2008 when sent off joint-favourite but unseated his rider at the Chair last year.

“The National has been his aim all year and we are looking forward to it,” said McCain.

Ballyholland also completed his serious preparation with a weekend workout, much to the delight of his trainer Colin McBratney.

“He’s in great form. I just hope the weather is going to dry out a bit this week. I think we’re supposed to have a better forecast and I’d like to have nice ground for him,” said the County Down handler.

“If Aintree gets two or three nice days it can make some difference to it.

“He’s done plenty of work and Andrew McNamara rode him round Navan two Saturdays ago. They jumped five fences over a mile and a half and Andrew said he felt great.

“He did his last piece of work on Saturday, so all’s going well with him.”

Evan Williams has similar ground reservations for State Of Play.

The 10-year-old was fourth to Mon Mome 12 months ago and is said to be in fine form after just the one run this season, in the Hennessy at Newbury in November.

“State Of Play is very well and we’re happy with his preparation,” said the Llancarfan trainer.

“At this time of year things dry very quickly and fingers crossed we can get two or three dry days next week before the weekend.

“You are always hopeful that you can build on what you did in the race last year. The statistics suggest it is always helpful to have had a bit of experience of the Aintree fences.”

Davy Condon rides Backstage for Gordon Elliott, who was successful with Silver Birch in 2007.

“All is well with him. I was at Gordon’s on Wednesday. The horse is in great form and came out of his race in Navan very well,” he said.

“He just didn’t like the ground there, it was heavy. He’s a good ground horse and I’m hoping we’ll get that in Aintree.

“He jumped round there in the Fox Hunters’ so he’s been over the fences and got a clear round.

“He’s a nice ride to get and Gordon’s been there before and done it, so he knows what it takes.”

Daryl Jacob is looking forward to riding Maljimar for Nick Williams.

“He seems in great form and we’ve deliberately kept him fresh. He’s a better horse for it. He jumped round Cheltenham’s cross-country course on his last run in December and is a good jumper,” Jacob said.

“Nick thinks he’ll stay the trip. He’s stepping up massively on what he’s done before. He likes better ground so we’re hoping for a good run.”

Conditions at Aintree have improved a little with the going on the Grand National course described as good to soft, soft in places.

Although up to four millimetres of rain could fall on Monday, the forecast for the rest of the week is pretty favourable.

Peddlers Cross was an impressive winner of the Neptune Investment Novices’ Hurdle at Prestbury Park and is set to put his unbeaten record on the line next week.

“He came out of Cheltenham great, I couldn’t be happier with him and the plan at this stage is to go to Aintree for the two-and-a-half mile novice hurdle,” the trainer told sportinglife.com.

BallaBriggs defied top weight to win the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir and he could be in action over the big National fences.

“He will have an entry in the Topham and possibly the three mile handicap chase but nothing is set in stone,” the trainer added.

“It would be undecided at the moment whether he runs again this season but at this stage we’ll be looking at making an entry in those two races.”

Mon Mome Wins Aintree Grand National

The 10-year-old landed the Aintree spectacular as a 100-1 shot last season, but will be a fraction of those odds this time having finished a fantastic third in last week’s Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Ryanair Chase winner Albertas Run is a notable scratching but both Madison du Berlais and Notre Pere remain at the head of the weights with 11st 10lb.

Mon Mome will carry 11st 7lb should those two stand their ground – but trainer Venetia Williams will not be too concerned if the weights rise.

“At the end of the day, it’s only a matter of 3lb, it’s not the be all and end all,” said Williams.

“A horse can fall, you are always afraid of getting hampered, you never know what might happen.

“Three pounds is not a major difference in the great scheme of things.

“His preparation has gone a lot better than it did last year and we have got a blueprint to follow.

“We were all very buoyed by what we saw him do at Cheltenham.

“It might have been a bit cheeky running in the Gold Cup as a prep race for the National, but there was £50,000 for third place and we were delighted with what he did.

“The hill at Cheltenham compensated for the extra mile he will get in the National.”

Williams’ Flintoff is currently 49th on the list and the trainer is hoping he too makes the final line-up on April 10.

“Flintoff has had a problem with his foot, but he’s in good form and is doing his work well. I hope he gets in,” Williams added.

“There’s no time for a prep run before the Grand National for him now, but he was second in the Midlands Grand National last year first time out so we wouldn’t be worried about going to Aintree fresh.”

Big Fella Thanks and Tricky Trickster remain among the possibles as champion trainer Paul Nicholls chases a first Grand National success, while Dessie Hughes has two leading chances with Vic Venturi and Black Apalachi.

Also among the 23 taken out were 2006 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner War Of Attrition, Taranis and Possol.

2009 Grand National Winner

There has been no rise in the weights for the famous four and a half mile showpiece as the trio who head the handicap on 11st 10lb, Albertas Run, Madison Du Berlais and Notre Pere, are all among the acceptors. Ellerslie George has been in fine form since joining Dorset trainer Nick Mitchell from Howard Johnson’s County Durham yard in the summer, and the 10-year-old is being primed for a tilt at the John Smith’s Grand National on Saturday, April 10. Mitchell’s charge has triumphed twice from four starts this term, each time ridden by owner Guy Henderson’s amateur rider son Robert.

Those victories include a career best effort in the Listed Badger Ales Trophy Handicap Chase at Wincanton in November, when Ellerslie George saw off The Tother One by a length and a half. The gelding’s latest start, in the victorchandler.com Handicap Chase at Ascot on January 23, saw him finish eighth of the 13 runners. Mitchell revealed:

“At the moment we are planning to go to Aintree for the John Smith’s Grand National. He’s fine after his last run when we were forced to go to Ascot with him. The ground was far too soft – he doesn’t like soft ground. He had a bit of a broken preparation with cancellations and a foot problem, which is absolutely fine now, so we took him there to get a run into him. He had a good blow and has come on. If it remains dry, we are hoping to go to Newbury on Saturday. If not, we might have to go straight to Aintree but it all depends on the weather and the ground.”

Henderson is not qualified to continue the partnership in the National but with Ellerslie George having completed the famous course twice previously, Mitchell has had plenty of interest from jockeys keen to take the ride at Liverpool. The trainer continued: “Robert is not qualified to ride him but I have a couple of jockeys up my sleeve – there are a few who are keen to ride him.

“As I said to them, I’ll get this weekend out of the way and then probably make a decision. When he ran in the Becher Chase the ground was heavy and in last season’s John Smith’s Topham he made a bad mistake at the first, went down on his nose and never got back into it. But he got round both times, he has experience of the fences and you never know.”

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls has five horses remaining in one of the few big races still to elude him, including the antepost favourite Tricky Trickster.

Last year’s John Smith’s Grand National third My Will and Taranis, both also possibles for the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup, Nozic and Big Fella Thanks complete Nicholls’ team. Six of the last 11 John Smith’s Grand Nationals have gone to Irish raiders and there are 31 remaining contenders who could add to that impressive record. Among the leading Irish-trained contenders are totesport.com Becher Chase winners Vic Venturi and Black Apalachi, who finished first and second in the recent Grade Two Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse, and the Gordon Elliott-trained Backstage, who has not run over fences since August.

Elliott has also kept the 2007 John Smith’s Grand National hero Silver Birch in the field, although he is not guaranteed to get a run with a maximum of 40 runners allowed to go to post. The 13-year-old is currently number 69 in the list of entries. The 2006 totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup hero War Of Attrition, who has a weight of 11st 1lb, remains in the race, while trainer Willie Mullins has seven entries still engaged including Snowy Morning, who finished third in the 2008 John Smith’s Grand National and ninth in last year’s renewal.

Silver Birch is one of three past John Smith’s Grand National winners still in the 2010 field. Last year’s 100/1 shock scorer Mon Mome along with the 2008 victor Comply Or Die, who finished second in 2009, also go forward.

Indeed, the first six from last year’s race could meet again. As well as Mon Mome, Comply Or Die and My Will, the first three home in 2009, fourth-placed State Of Play, Cerium (fifth) and Big Fella Thanks, who came sixth, are all still in this year’s contest.

Comply Or Die’s trainer David Pipe has no less than nine entries still remaining including The Package, who is currently favourite for the William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase at Cheltenham while among the other leading contenders is last season’s Irish Grand National hero Niche Market, star of Bob Buckler’s stable, and Welsh National hero Dream Alliance, who boasts a great rags-to-riches story.

There is a second scratchings stage on March 23 ahead of the five-day confirmation deadline on April 5 and the final declaration stage on April 8.
